How Can Kids Help?: Helping the Environment

How Can Kids Help ?

Helping the Environment

Why Is this Important?

The website, Easy Science for Kids says, "Think about how you feel when your room is a mess. Maybe there are socks and dirty clothes piled on the floor. An old banana peel sits on the dresser and juice from a tipped over juice box drips down the side. How does your room feel? Do you like spending time there? Probably not. You might feel frustrated and annoyed. But when your room is clean, it feels peaceful, happy and safe.

The earth is your home, too. And when it’s clean and healthy, the people, plants and animals that live on it are clean, healthy and happy. The Earth is a fragile place that can be damaged easily by people. The good news is that people can also clean it up and take care of it."

Clean Playground

"Celina, Isabel, Julia, and Rebecca of Massachusetts cleaned up a playground in their neighborhood. First they picked up the trash. Then they hung a sign on a fence that read, "Please Keep Our Park Clean." They also had a bake sale to raise money to buy plants for their playground. "

What Can You Do?

You can try these things at home:

Water

  • Turn the faucet off when you are brushing your teeth or washing hands.

  • Take quick showers most of the time instead of baths.

  • If you hang towels up after using them, they will dry and can be used again.

  • Is there a leaky faucet or toilet in the bathroom at school?  Be sure to let someone know so that it can be repaired.

Trash

  • Pick up trash at a local park or schoolyard. Be sure to have plenty of gloves and trash bags on hand!

  • Re-use plastic and cardboard containers.

  • Recycle and compost when possible.

Electricity

  • Turn the lights off when you leave a room.

Fuel

  • Try to walk or ride your bike when you go places.

  • Have a stay-cation!
