How Can Kids Help?: Helping Your Community

How Can Kids Help ?

Helping Your Community

Why Is this Important?

Have you heard the expression “Be the change you want to see in the world?" That means that you must try to do good things if you want our world to be a good place. But sometimes it is hard for kids to know where to start.

When you work in your community, you can start with small acts like helping an elderly neighbor shovel snow. When you volunteer in your community you can get your friends and their parents to help, too. And besides feeling good, you will really be able to see the difference you are making!

Giving Teddy Bears

"Samantha of California wanted to help kids who have lost their homes in fires. So she started a penny drive at school and collected $300 in pennies! Then she bought 61 teddy bears and brought them to her fire department. The fire department gives the bears to kids to comfort them after a fire."

What Can You Do?

Start small:

  • Help a neighbor
  • Make a bird feeder

Get your friends to help, too:

  • Make a birthday donation by asking people to contribute money or supplies instead of buying a gift for you, if there is a family in your community who needs help.
  • Set up a piggy bank for you and your friends to fill with pennies, nickels, and dimes. Donate the money to a local charity.
  • Hold a food drive by asking friends and neighbors to contribute foods like rice, dry beans, canned foods, flour, and sugar.
  • Clean up a park or stream.
