If We Live in the Present, Why Should We Care about the Past?: Q1. What is the difference between a cause and an effect?

2nd Grade Community History Inquiry

What is the Difference between a Cause and an Effect?

Think about a disagreement you have had with a friend, brother or sister, or parent in the past:

  • What started the disagreement?
  • How did it end?

Write about this in your Notebook

1. Cause and Effect

Why a disagreement starts is the cause. What happens as a result of the disagreement is the effect.

The cause is WHY it happens. The effect is WHAT happens.

Cause: My brother called me a name.

Effect: I started to cry.

Cause and effect do not always have to do with disagreements, though. Let's watch a video!

2. Create a Cause and Effect T-Chart

Let's look at some other examples of cause and effect to see how the history of our own community has changed over time:

1. Building our indoor playground:
Cause: Children want to be able to play even on rainy days
Effect: Children get more exercise and can stay healthier

2. Building new houses in Armonk:
Causes: People want to move here because their families have grown. People move here because they like the schools.
Effects: More children will be attending school. Classes might get bigger.

Cause Effect

Now turn and talk with a partner about some causes and effects you can think of. Use your family, school and community as your sources. Write your ideas in your Research Notebook, and then we will make a class T-Chart.
