Tenements: Home

Here are some resources on the tenement living conditions of immigrants in NYC.

"The Tenement Museum" article from American Heritage magazine

The history magazine American Heritage published an excellent article about the New York City tenement museum in April 2000. A xerox copy with all the photos is available from HCC library, but the text (with photos omitted) is available online through the GALE database.

Nonfiction Books

Cobblestone's "Tenement" issue

The February, 2004 issue of Cobblestone magazine is all about tenements.  It is in child-friendly language. You can access all of these articles online (outside of the building you will need the GALE password) by clicking on the articles below or clicking on this link.

*The articles are much, much better in print because there are excellent photos. Please ask for a copy of the printed magazine from the library.*
