Do We Have to Have Rules?: Q3. What would happen if we did not have rules?

SS Inquiry for Stds. 2.3 The United States is founded on the principles of democracy, and these principles are reflected in all types of communities. 2.4 Communities have rules and laws that affect how they function.

What would happen if we did NOT have rules? Do we need classroom rules? Do communities need rules? Would we be safe if we did not have rules? Would people be good to each other and to the environment?

Pre-reading Discussion

You will be reading two articles:

  • The first is about a school that decides it does not need rules on the playground.
  • The second is about why we do need rules.

Before we read the articles, let's brainstorm what is good or bad about a school with NO rules.

Article 1:" A School with No Rules"

Read the article, " A School with No Playground Rules."

Think about these questions after you read the article:

  • What did you notice about the community?
  • Did anything positive happen with NO rules?

Article 2: "Why Do We Need Rules?"

Read the article, "Why Do We Need Rules?"

What did you notice about this article?

Discuss the rules you have experienced in your life and give the reasons for them.

Write your ideas on a chart.

Post-Reading: Two Opinions on Rules

Now you will complete a two-sided chart about Rules.

  • One side is called: Having No Rules is NO Problem
  • The other is called: Having No Rules is a BIG Problem

Divide your class  into two groups to complete each side of the chart.
