What ONE symbol best represents the United States?

 

You have done so much work with American symbols!

  • You have studied American symbols and know that symbols stand for big ideas.
  • You know that American symbols mean a lot to United States citizens.
  • You have polled your family and community members and learned that sometimes people interpret symbols differently.
  • Now it's time to review everything you have discovered about symbols and use that knowledge to answer the question, "What ONE symbol best represents the United States?"

Review Your Work.

  • Go through your research journal and look over all your work.
  • Pay careful attention to the LibGuide articles about each symbol.
  • Choose the symbol you think best stands for the United States.
  • Read the eBook about the symbol you have chosen.

Guess My Symbol!
Now you are going to make a Guess My Symbol box that shows your thinking.  You will have information on three sides of your box and on the underside of the lid. On the inside of the box will be a diorama showing the symbol. Here is a list of the information that must be included on the three sides of your symbol box:

1.The meaning of your symbol
2. Your symbol's history
3. Why you chose the symbol

On the inside lid of your box, you will write:

  • The name of the symbol you chose, and your name. 

On the inside of your box you will create a diorama of the symbol you chose. Please look at the BOX DIAGRAM to see where to write each piece of information and how to make sure it is right-side-up.

 

Use the graphic organizer in your research journal to help you organize your ideas.

When you know what you are going to say, get a box template from your teacher and start working on your Guess My Symbol box! It's important that you follow the diagram below so that your information is in the correct places, and that everything will be right-side-up when the box is folded.
